Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire So Long As The Three Lions' Star Leaves Egotism Outside.
One snub did the trick. Another and it might have appeared vindictive from the England manager, who is far too wily not to understand that winning the World Cup is probably going to require contributions by Jude Bellingham, even if it is also on the midfielder to blend into the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies required with the national team now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.
Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is a matter of harnessing it appropriately. Skill is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when fame prevails. Still, a message has been sent.
The midfielder was given food for thought after not being selected of last month’s squad. He observed England book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the squad's spirit and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in top form, scoring crucial goals for his club versus Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on intimidating opponents instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has made him realize that playing for one's country is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover around the youngster after proving that he is willing to make big calls.
“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Jude displays that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone must help him and create an environment which he can channel that intensity towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated much of the focus at the team news conference for this month’s meaningless matches versus Serbia and the other. Who else? Indeed, how about another talent? This is another prodigious playmaker in need of coaching. He has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to reach his best this year but the boss had to consider the 25-year-old after his performance in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, however, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to include another youngster once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager never found the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, restricting Harry Kane’s influence in the process.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it harms the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who has to be through the middle. The coach prefers him near the striker. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “He will play in the central attacking zone, through the center. I have this idea about him for years. In my view it suits him best.”
He agreed there are occasions when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, I don’t know.
“I think he is additionally accustomed to representing his club in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he benefits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel talked about Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and the other scoring strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Interest is high.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or the other. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives if Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter setting up Kane to score in an international match against Scotland in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in many appearances for England when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other once during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is missing.
“This is where eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to be blunt. Remains a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He may not be assured to start versus the upcoming opponents. The manager desires Bellingham committed but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an more effective one.
