Pacific Bluefin Fish Sells for Unprecedented Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo New Year Sale

A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.

The successful bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets across the country and overseas.

"The year's tuna heralds fortune," commented the business owner, a familiar figure at the annual new year's auction.

Referred to as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is renowned for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the winner informed the press that he was "astonished at the final price," adding, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This most recent acquisition tops his own notable purchases:

• He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
• He paid 155 million yen the following year.
• In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after previously saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to break his personal record once again.

A Tradition of High Prices

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which announced the fish would be featured at its eateries nationwide.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter processed for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants soon after the auction was finished.

"I sense like I've begun the year in a positive way after consuming something so lucky as the year starts," shared one elated patron.
