Big 12 Conference Commissioner Calls Notre Dame Remarks Following CFP Snub as ‘Totally Out of Bounds’

At a public criticism, Big 12 Conference commissioner stated that Notre Dame's athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “entirely out of bounds” for public comments targeting the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Controversy

Notre Dame maintains a football scheduling alliance with the ACC and is a full member in all other sports. The AD has argued that the ACC harmed Notre Dame’s chances to enter the College Football Playoff, instead pushing for the selection of the University of Miami.

“The ACC do wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we offer significant football value to the ACC, and we couldn't comprehend why you would go out of your way to try to damage us in this selection,” the athletic director said.

The Hurricanes ultimately received the CFP spot over Notre Dame, largely due to winning the head-to-head matchup between the two schools. Notre Dame's AD additionally stated that the ACC engaged in a targeted social media campaign over multiple weeks indicating its support for Miami.

An Egregious Rebuke

Subsequently on Tuesday, the Big 12 commissioner addressed the allegations at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“My opinion is that his behavior has been unacceptable,” Yormark said. “He is totally out of bounds in his method and if he was in the room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

This public response is especially striking given Bevacqua’s special standing. He serves on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the concerns of independent Notre Dame.

Past Support and Speculative Rumors

The commissioner also pointed out the lifeline the ACC provided Notre Dame during the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, providing the Irish a full ACC schedule and a place in its title game.

“His behavior has been unacceptable,” Yormark reiterated. “It’s been unacceptable criticizing Jim Phillips, when they rescued Notre Dame during Covid...”

Rumors had spread about Notre Dame potentially leaving the ACC and aligning with the Big 12. Yet, Yormark's strong comments on Tuesday seem to make such a partnership highly improbable in the near term.

Notre Dame, who made the CFP championship game last season, have indicated they will decline a postseason invitation after failing to qualify this year.
