Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
