At least 64 Killed in Rio's Most Extensive Police Raid on Organized Crime
A minimum of 64 people died in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's records.
Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. In excess of 80 individuals were taken into custody.
Violent conflicts commenced when about 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization responded with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities confirmed.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Local authorities said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Residents have likened the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
Roads remain closed across the area.
Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the operation, along with multiple guns.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies follows a year-long investigation.
Dozens of the suspects are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.
