Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.
Play-Off Decider
That set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better individual. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” said the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Contenders
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to make up, coming up a stroke behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
